Retail Analytics: From Big Data on Consumer Behavior and Operational Performance to Actionable Insights by Robert Rooderkerk (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University) joint work with Nicole DeHoratius (University of Chicago) & Andrés Musalem (University of Chile)

Abstract
The introduction of many new technologies in retail has led to an abundance of data, including new, often unstructured, data sources. These so-called big data allow for better measurement of consumer behavior and operational performance. The degree to which the use of these new data will also deliver improved insights for retail operations, depends on the successful adoption of advanced analytics. Our study will summarize the developments in practice (“the evolution of analytics”), and contrast these to the state of academic research. I will present the results of the analyses we have so far conducted, including bibliometric analyses and text analyses of Twitter data. I will also discuss our plans for additional analyses. Our study intends to provide academics with a clear roadmap for future research on retail analytics by considering the following two questions: i) what exciting new challenges come with the availability of new data sources? ii) what analytics needs (will) exist in practice? We plan to provide practitioners with best-in-class examples per decision area (e.g., assortment planning, inventory management, returns handling), and an overview of how existing and future academic research can help address the challenges in these domains.

First Meeting to be held in June 2016

2015-10-29 13:26:22

The kick-off meeting will be organized in 2016 as the first meeting of the EWG on Retail Operations. The first International Workshop on OR in Retail Operations (IW Retail Ops) is scheduled for June 3rd to 5th, 2016 at Castle Hirschberg, Beilngries, close to Munich, Germany (http://www.tagungshaus-schloss-hirschberg.de). Since its first edition, the workshop has no registration fee. Accommodation, facilities, lunches and the dinner are covered by the participants.

We plan to hold this meeting each second year, always in May/June to create a sustainable and long-lasting OR community that is working on retail topics.

Furthermore, we will continue as in the past to organize a stream on "Retail Demand and Supply" at the EURO and IFORS conferences. It is also the objective to organize further streams/session on OR applications in retail operations at other conferences such as POMS Annual conference or International Conference on Operations Research.
